Lockdown

December 4, 2020

Laura Duff

It has been almost 9 months since the UK went into a national lockdown (Monday the16th of March, 2020). Recently, an American multinational pharmaceutical corporation ‘Pfizer’ found a 90% effective COVID-19 vaccine.

The feeling I had when I read the news was something I have never experienced before. It made me realise that during 2020, though we have been isolated for an unnatural duration, the world and those in it have never seemed so close. We have ALL been in it together. No matter your age, nationality, the amount of money in your bank account; none of that matters. The entire globe is in a pandemic, together. So, when I read about the vaccine, it felt as if I were reading it with the entire world - even though I was walking alone. We have lived through an incredible year, so much so I feel that no news story can phase me anymore.

Everybody’s lockdown was different. Everyone around the world was stuck. Personally, I was at home with my family. I lived with them solidly for 6 months, the longest time since the end of 2018. Not only that, but during that time, they were the only ones I could see. Like the majority of the world during the first lockdown, we all took it very seriously.

In my opinion, the worst thing about the first lockdown was the unknown. We didn’t know how long it was going to last. Sometimes it felt like nothing was ever going to change. The days felt like a groundhog reality of bad news, trying to be productive, trying not to worry about everything, wanting to be hopeful but not wanting to get our expectations up… There was a conflict between, “I need to seethe news to see if anything has changed”, waiting for that Thursday announcement with Nicola (at least in Scotland), and “I need to turn this off for my mental wellbeing”.

What a year, if we survived 2020 - we can survive anything.
