5 o’clock in the morning. A time most of us have never seen. A time I barely even knew really existed. I’d heard rumours about it, but I thought it may have been something mystical. A dark figment of some health freaks and hard-working people’s imaginations.
I did something I have never done before in my 20 years of living. I woke up at 5am. Not only this, but I did a 5 KILOMETER RUN whilst the sun was rising. And do you know what? I… dare I say it…I enjoyed it. I had the motivation of my best friend, Sophia, doing it also (although not together, I was in Glasgow and she was in Berlin, so a few thousand miles apart). Since I knew she was bearing the pain of dragging herself out of bed that morning, I knew it could do it too. You know what; it was a surreal experience.
It was crisp and almost dark when I went out and started my jog, it was cloudy but in a nice way. The world is so quiet at that point. It made my mind feel a bit more peaceful than usual, as the craziness of the world wasn’t there. It almost felt like it wasn’t 2020…
And another thing is, it was too early to think about how hard the 5k was so I actually managed to complete it. Something I find VERY hard to do during the day, when my brain is functioning well enough to say, “Laura you are literally about to die. GIVE UP!”
If you are brave, bored, or just want to give it a go- I highly recommend attempting the sunrise 5k. Even if it turns into a morning 1k- that is o.k.
